The MARC Auditorium, located at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education campus in Bangalore, India, adapts to its surroundings. The Purple Ink Studio designed the program as a key focal point for the bustling academic area spanning 80 acres, and it features two different facilities: a food court spanning two levels and a 1,200-seater theater located above.
The goal was to create a dynamic and engaging experience that enhanced the sense of place and encouraged social interaction. The gentle enclosure of a looping, encircling plaza balances the interplay between built and open spaces, resulting in pockets of visual and spatial connectedness.
MARC Auditorium, with a diameter of 52 meters, anchors the complex’s spatial dynamism, serving as a central core while the concentric plaza blurs the line between indoors and outdoors. Circular geometric motifs are meticulously handled to define the user experience while being surrounded by the facade’s undulating rings.
Within, The Purple Ink Studio investigates this dramatic spatial interchange through various layers and a series of divergent ramps that converge around the Auditorium’s circular shape. The architects prioritize reducing urban weight and establishing welcoming communal spaces, rather than strengthening existing barriers.
Aditi Pai and Akshay Heranjal founded Purple Ink Studio in Bengaluru in 2011 with a very small starting point and a completely new home ground. They were on a mission to find a paradigm shift in the way designs were seen.
Using a non-linear method, it created free-spirited architecture. While discovering art in all of its forms, the crew was able to ponder and be inspired by the tales and profound lessons they contained.
By welcoming and recognising independent thought processes, the studio has evolved into a skilled and autonomous culture of collective artistic accomplishments. This culture frequently extends beyond the artistic fields, allowing for different collaborations.
