Inside the Gorgeous West Village Duplex Residence Designed by Interior Designer Purvi Padia

Purvi Padia

The airy Manhattan home of interior and tabletop designer Purvi Padia mirrors her passion for entertaining, classical architecture, and luxury hotels.

Amid the modern aesthetics of New York City’s West Village, Padia’s 5,900-square-foot family duplex stands out as a nod to classical architecture. Featuring elements such as precise symmetry, robust columns, and dramatic stone slabs, the space embodies the Latin principles of firmitas, utilitas, venustas (strength, utility, beauty).

“These architectural features remind me of ancient Greek and Roman buildings,” Padia says. “To me, a more traditional space feels richer and warmer, with a deeper sense of heritage.” Architect Alex Nizhikhovskiy of the Turett Collaborative, who worked on the project, describes this design approach as adding “an extra layer of detail, scale, and craftsmanship,” akin to classical architecture but with a modern touch. The home’s standout feature is its voluptuous, curved staircase, which rises gracefully in the double-height foyer. It serves as a sculptural centerpiece, drawing the eye and becoming a focal point visible from nearly every part of the home.

Padia, who often hosts philanthropic events as a board member of UNICEF USA, finds design’s role in hospitality particularly meaningful. “Design is my study, but hospitality is my passion,” says the New York native. She integrates influences from hotels like Athens’s Astir Palace and Paris’s Hôtel de Crillon into her home’s décor, aiming to bring the luxurious qualities of these spaces into her everyday life.

For instance, the primary bedroom features a tea bar inspired by the in-room service at the Cheval Blanc hotel in Paris, ensuring that her favorite nightcap is always within reach. The Philippe Malouin Group chaise, with a view of the New Jersey skyline, completes this serene retreat. Additionally, the powder room showcases fluted lavender marble, adding a touch of elegance and making guests feel as though they are in a chic hotel. “A beautiful bathroom can make guests feel like they’re experiencing a special night out,” Padia notes.
